Using non-fiction books we read about how farmers used to look for hibernating animals to help them figure out when spring would arrive so they could plant their crops. We learned facts about groundhogs and how they are related to the squirrel and eat grass, vegetables and fruit. And of course we learned about Groundhog Day and how it is a fun holiday that people all over the country celebrate to help get rid of the winter blues and look forward to the warm spring weather.
In pre-school we learned all about shadows by reading "Who Will See Their Shadows This Year?" by Jerry Pallotta. We used the projector light to make shadow puppets and then we pretended to be groundhogs crawling through a tunnel and popping out to make a Groundhog Day prediction.
Finally, we made groundhog puppets so that we can tell our families all about Groundhog Day.
What do you think Phil the Groundhog's weather prediction will be this February 2nd? Will he see his shadow and we'll get six more weeks of winter? Or will he not see his shadow and we'll get an early spring? Post your prediction in the comment section or stop by the school to vote on our poster.
Happy Groundhog Day!
