I see each of the 13 K classes only once a week for 50 minutes so it takes me 6 weeks to spend as much time with a class as their classroom does in one day. With K's you can't overwhelm them with all the rules and routines in just one day. It takes a few weeks for some and up to a couple of months for others. The first quarter is not easy. The whole school is feeling it!
So.....I've kept you in suspense long enough.....inside the Mystery Bag was my good ol' friend Pete the Cat! This first week of school I will be reading "Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes" by Eric Litwin. Along with Pete the bag contained the following clues: a backpack, a lunch box, and a toy bus. The children had to guess the setting of the story and then I introduced Pete. Most of the children had seen Pete before but not many had heard this particular story.
The students enjoyed singing along to the story and making predictions about where Pete was going in his new school. I would ask them to predict what his song would sound like. For example...when Pete was in the lunch room the children figured out that the song would be "I'm eating in my school shoes."
For our re-telling activity I put out a box of props that went with the story. I asked the students to tell me different things that Pete sang about in school and then we matched a prop to his song. For example: a jump rope went with "I'm playing in my school shoes." After we matched all the props with the song and sequenced the props (I had picture cue cards to help them sequence) I gave each child a prop to hold. We listened to the audio book version of the book and when Pete sang his song the child holding the prop that matched the lyrics got to stand up and act it out. We went through this twice so everyone would get a turn.
As a coloring/take home activity the children got to design and color a new shoe for Pete. The back page had pictures of all the clues so they could re-tell the story to their families.
All in all, a hectic and chaotic first day all around. Kindergarten is hard work....no matter how big or little you are!
Tune in next week to see what will be in the mystery bag next.
-----------------------
