This week we are beginning to learn about the difference between Fiction and Non-Fiction. We first discussed the difference between things that were real, or realistic, and things that are fake, or make-believe. In the Mystery Bag was a strange looking creature and a stuffed animal of a buffalo. We decided that the strange creature, called a Gruffalo, was make-believe and fake. It could never be a real thing! We also decided that the stuffed toy of a buffalo was realistic, in other words, it looks like the real thing…I mean you can't always have a real live buffalo in front of you to learn about what they look like, right? So we have to rely upon realistic objects or photographs or books to help us learn about them.
We sorted the other objects in the back into realistic and make-believe: Mickey Mouse (make-believe), a potato (real), Mr. Potato Head (make-believe), a realistic looking bird (real), an Angry Bid (make-believe), etc….
After we sorted the objects we discussed how books and stories could also be realistic and make-believe. For example, "The Cat in the Hat" is a make-believe story because we know that cats can't talk like people or wear clothes. We looked at a book about lions and saw the realistic photographs of lions and learned about where they live and what they eat (ewww…. we saw a photograph of a lion eating a zebra!) ad determined that this book was realistic.
Before continuing to sort through a stack of books we learned two new vocabulary words for describing books. A book that tells a story and is make-believe is called Fiction. A book that we read to leaner something and tells us about true things and places is called Non-Fiction. Now that we learned these new words we went to work and sorted a stack of books into Fiction and Non-Fiction…it was so easy now that we learned how! Ask me to tell you more about it!
After sorting the objects and books we had story time. The name of this week's story was "The Gruffalo" by Julia Donaldson. We determined that a gruffly is not a real thing and that the author wrote this story to entertain us and therefore this book is……(ask me to tell you what it was…fiction or non-fiction).
After story time we worked on an activity where we had to cut out pictures and sort and paste them into the correct categories…fiction or non-fiction. Some students left theirs in the Library for me to display so visit the Library to check out their work!
We are really learning so much this year. I love Kindergarten!

Me encanta Kindergarten !
